Description

Gholamhossein Ebrahimi Dinani is one of the most vital, prolific, and fiercely independent voices in contemporary philosophy. For a Western audience, introducing Dinani is not squarely about presenting an “Eastern scholar”; it is about engaging with a philosopher who systematically dismantles the deep-seated Western narrative that rational philosophy in the Islamic world died with Averroes in the 12th century. In the West, philosophy and mysticism are often treated as distinct, if not hostile, domains – the cold rationality of the Enlightenment versus the subjective emotions of Romanticism. Dinani is the premier contemporary advocate of Illuminationist philosophy. Dinani argues that ‘Aql (intellect/reason) and Ishraq (spiritual illumination) are not opposites but mutually reinforcing paths to truth. For a Western audience raised on Cartesian dualism, Dinani offers a holistic epistemology where the mind calculates, but the heart perceives, culminating in what he calls “illuminated reason.”
